George Hemphill, of Hemphill Artworks, DC, will speak at the Jackson Art Center about his career as an art dealer in Washington D.C.
Hemphill began working as an independent art advisor in 1991. He opened Hemphill Fine Arts in Georgetown, Washington, DC in 1993, in 2003 relocating first to the 14th Street neighborhood, and then to Mount Vernon Triangle (K Street) in 2020. He has helped build many significant private and corporate art collections.
In addition to shows of Hemphill artists, he has curated numerous exhibitions on a variety of subjects; Vietnam-Then and Now, Our Good Earth, The Evolution of Landscape Painting in 20th Century, Economy of Scale, The Aldus and Dolly Chapin Collections, More or Less, Artist Citizen, among others.
Founding member of the board of directors for District of Columbia Art Center (DCAC), a founding board member of FotoWeek DC, a former board member of the Association of Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD). He has served twice as co-chair of the Washington Project of the Arts annual auction.
Often invited to lecture, he has spoken at the Smithsonian Institute, the Art League of Washington, Institute of Art, Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art, the Kreeger Museum, Western Carolina University, among others.
